In pediatric cardiovascular health prevention non-invasive diagnostics of subclinical atherosclerosis are essential for screenings and interventional purposes. Early individual risk screening becomes especially important in the context of increasing rates of overweight and obesity. Increased carotid artery intima-media thickness (IMT) has been reported in the presence of cardiovascular risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. The aims of the present thesis are, firstly, to investigate the validity and feasibility of the sonography of IMT in a pediatric population and to determine sex- and age-specific norm values. Secondly, to assessed possible relationships between IMT, cardiovascular risk factors and physical fitness in healthy, overweight and obese children and adolescents. Thirdly, to evaluate the outcomes of multidisciplinary intervention strategies on IMT, cardiovascular risk factors and physical fitness.
