The thesis revolves around of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) complexes of iridium(I) and palladium(II). Neutral and cationic iridium(I) complexes with a general formula [Ir(I)CyNHC(COD)]A were synthesized with a range of anions A and were applied in transfer hydrogenation reaction. The catalytic activity can be rationalized by anions’ pKa values and hard-soft acid-base (HSAB) principle. Neutral and cationic NHC-palladium(II) complexes Pd(II)NHC(Cl)(X)]Y with a monodendate, phthalimido-functionalized NHC were prepared and applied as catalysts in Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction under aqueous aerobic conditions. Changing the second ligand from strong σ-donating NHC, labile phosphane and amine to weakly coordinating acetonitrile, significantly changes in the catalytic activity were observed.
