In this retrospective study, we analyzed the data of 87 patients who were operated between 1995 and 2004 because of an injury of the cervical spine. After approximately 8,5 years we arranged for a follow-up examination with an x-ray photograph of the cervical spine.
We were able to include 38 of the 76 surviving patients. Degenerative changes could be examined in the lower and upper segment of the spondylodesis in 24% of the cases. Spontaneous fusions were elicited in 8% of the cases. The range of motion was limited about 50% in rotation and about 40% in the lateral inclination and reclination. 81% of the patients improved neurologically during the follow-up examination. Of these, 44% did not have any neurological lesions. Summing up, it can be stated that all long-term results affirm the current therapie of injuries of the cervical spine.
