Energy storage systems are a key component for low carbon power systems. This thesis is concerned with the assessment of stationary battery energy storage and with improving their operation. Economic metrics and the impact on the carbon emissions of operating battery systems are discussed. In addition, two control algorithms for battery systems are proposed to improve the overall value of battery systems. The first algorithm facilitates fuzzy-logic control and optimization. The second algorithm is a segmentation of battery resources. Both show promising results in simulations.
