Hydraulic steering systems are currently replaced by electromechanical steering systems because of some essential advantages, e.g. reduced fuel consumption. An important characteristic of the electromechanical steering system is the choice of an adequate motor torque for the assistance of the driver. This work deals with the controller which follows a reference steering torque. First, the requirements for the controller are derived and specified. Then, the steering system is modelled and analyzed. Different controllers are designed and compared. This includes numeric simulations of dynamic manoeuvres and real vehicle measurements.
