An engineering approach reveals that the enormous efforts – and with this, the costs – for spaceflight cannot be significantly reduced in the foreseeable future. Potential and motivation of different interest groups to actually realize space ventures vary significantly. Starting with the historical context, classification of space related benefits into four categories and detailed examination in relation to efforts result in clear statements about benefits and motivation of spaceflight. Raumfahrt steht im Spannungsfeld zwischen Begeisterung und Kritik, die sich meist am hohen Mittelbedarf entzündet. Ingenieursmäßige Betrachtung zeigt auf, dass der enorme Aufwand der Raumfahrt nicht reduzierbar ist und auch für die vorhersehbare Zukunft kaum niedrigere Kosten fordert. Potential und Motivation zur Durchführung von Raumfahrtunternehmungen sind je nach Interessensgruppe unterschiedlich. Beginnend mit geschichtlichen Zusammenhängen resultiert die Einteilung von Raumfahrtthemen in vier Gebiete und deren Durchleuchtung in eindeutigen Aussagen zu Nutzen und Motivation der Raumfahrt. Das Ergebnis spiegelt die heutige Situation der Raumfahrt wider und lässt Schlüsse auf die Zukunft zu.     «
