The attenuation, distortion and propagation behaviour was analysed by very fast transient measurements on a real gas insulated transmission line (GIL) with a length of 900 m and confirmed by theoretical calculations. With the derived simulation model a 500-kV-DC system with a hybrid transmission line is build for insulation-coordination studies. In addition to the conventional application of external surge arresters, the application of internal surge arresters and two combinations of external and internal surge arresters are analysed.
