The reduction of nitrogen oxides in the exhaust gas of lean-burn engines can be performed by the selective catalytic reduction with ammonia. Fe-exchanged zeolite catalysts are promising materials as an alternative for the toxic and environmentally harmful V

3 systems. In the context of this work, the ageing behaviour of these catalysts was examined and the nature and efficiency of the catalytically active centres was determined. These sites undergo dynamic changes under reaction conditions by occupying positions in the framework during cooling and by forming the catalytically active dimers only under reaction conditions.
