Photocatalysis, in a more definitive sense, concerns the formation of the catalytically active species through light or the impact of light on the catalytic cycle. In the present work, the influence of light irradiation on carbon carbon (CC) bond forming reactions (e.g. Heck) in organic synthesis has been investigated in detail. An increase in the rate of the Heck reaction under (UV-)vis irradiation was proven experimentally and the mechanisms were presented (photocatalytic reduction of Pd(II) species to Pd(0)). Heterogeneous catalysts also showed an increase in activity under (UV )vis irradiation. Oxidative CC coupling reactions between benzene and styrene were investigated by varying different reaction parameters. The most critical step in the catalytic cycle is the reoxidation of Pd(0) to Pd(II), which was effectively accomplished using cocatalysts (e.g. quinones).
