By using a lubricant with a high micro-pitting resistance, high costs due to a replacement of affected gears can be avoided. As a result, lubricants must be approved with regard to their micro-pitting resistance. The test method according to FVA 54/7 used for this purpose was developed about 30 years ago. Within the scope of this work, the micro-pitting test was examined for its practical suitability and further developed. The aim of the present work was to ensure a reliable test method for determining the micro-pitting resistance of gear oils.
