This thesis describes a robust and stable approach for the simulation of three-dimensional fluid-structure interaction problems involving large structural deformations. The novel method is able to provide a proper resolution of the flow features at the structural surface throughout the entire simulation, by adding a fine deforming boundary layer mesh around the structure. This fluid patch is then embedded into the fixed-grid background fluid. Numerical examples demonstrate the excellent performance of this method.
