Modern highly loaded centrifugal compressors are characterized by a high total pressure ratio with a large rotational speed and a compact design, which usually leads to a short distance between the impeller trailing edge and diffuser leading edge. In this work, the resultant rotor-stator-interaction of a centrifugal compressor is investigated numerically and has been compared with published unsteady optical measurements. Different numerical methods of FINETurbo from Numeca were evaluated. Furthermore the free software OpenFOAM was used. An extension for transonic turbomachinery has been implemented in this software. The necessary mathematical relationships were derived and implemented in numerical methods. Differences and similarities between the results of experimental and numerical investigations were identified, analysed and finally evaluated.
