MIA (Melanoma-Inhibitory-Activity) is a protein secreted from melanoma cells. In this work the use of MIA as a tumormarker for malignant melanoma (MM) has been evaluated. We measured 1361 serum samples from 120 melanoma patients during follow-up or undergoing therapy. Using a cut-off value of 9,8 ng/ml corresponding to the 97. perzentile in the serum of healthy donors we found sensitivities of 18,9 5 and 80,7 % in stage III and IV, respectively. Overall MIA showed a very high specifity of 98,9%. Therefore an increase of MIA could be regarded as a sign of new, mainly distant, metastases. The fact that MIA showed a correlation to tumor burden confirmed its value for monitoring course of disease. Additionally a rise of MIA can precede the clinical manifestation of metastases and therefore might be an indicator of a poorer prognosis.
