Aim of this cross-sectional study is an epidemiological investigation of Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Collected data include living conditions, financial situation, social network and leisure activities. Etiologic factors are discussed. Moreover, health care utilization of BPD-patients is investigated in diverse facilities. The three participating groups consisted of acute patients of a psychiatric inpatient unit as well as outpatients and psychosomatic inpatients. The well being of the patient and the severity of the disorder was considered with regard to the current therapeutic situation. Taking into account the phase of illness, advantages and disadvantages of the therapeutic options are discussed. Finally, factors are identified, which influence health care utilization. In that respect, the study looks predominantly at self-mutilating behaviour (reasons, methods etc.) and life satisfaction.
