Femtosecond spectroscopy is applied to examine photophysical and photochemical processes in technically and pharmaceutically relevant organic molecules. The experiments comprise broadband transient absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence upconversion. Moreover, we demonstrate the generation of well-defined optical activity during laser desorption with circularly polarised femtosecond pulses in a racemic film deposited on an achiral substrate using surface-second-harmonic spectroscopy and numerical modelling.
