Mundhöhlenkarzinome können zu beträchtlichen Einschränkungen der Sprach- und Schluckfunktion führen. Die Auswirkungen auf die Lebensqualität wurden durch eine prospektive Studie an 109 Patienten anhand eines standardisierten Fragebogens und eines Sprachverständlichkeitstests eruiert. Den Ergebnissen zufolge haben funktionelle Aspekte in Bezug auf die Lebensqualität die höchste Priorität. Die Selbsteinschätzung der Patienten korreliert in hohem Maß mit objektiven Funktionstests. Patienten mit einer Kombinationstherapie aus Operation und Radiatio gaben eine schlechtere Lebensqualität an als Patienten mit alleiniger operativer Therapie. In Langzeitmessungen der Perfusion und Oxygenierung mikrochirurgischer Transplantate durch ein Kombinationsverfahren aus Laser Doppler Spektroskopie und Gewebespektrometrie zeigte sich eine signifikante postoperative Zunahme des Blutflusses, welche auch 3,5 Jahre nach der Operation noch nachweisbar war.
