In this survey the reading performance of RFID transponders injected under the animals skin were examined. Various laboratory and field tests showed that by choosing an appropriate antennae array in a walk through gate and a good transponder position within the animal’s body a highly reliable readout of the transponders can be achieved. It was also shown that, by using a tissue compatible PTFE material on the transponder glass surface, a migration within the animal’s body can be minimised. The detection rate can be improved and, as a side effect, the retrieval of the transponder in the animal’s body during slaughter is much better.
