The study “HErpes Virus in Intervertebral DIsc” (HEVIDI) uses PCR to examine HSV, CMV and VZV as well as enteroviruses and Parvovirus B19 in disc sequestra of patients with intervertebral disc herniation in the cervical or lumbar spine. All 54 patient sera were also tested for the presence of IgG antibodies. No HSV, CMV, VZV or enterovirus was found in the intervertebral discs. However, there were positive results for Parvovirus B19 in 52% of the cases. Further studies are essential to assess the impact of Parvovirus B 19 on disc herniation.
