In this work a systematic approach to the exchange of counter ions of Zintl phases is examined. An exchange system is setup and applied to bare and substituted Zintl clusters. New structures and nanoparticles are characterized using XRD, Raman and TEM methods. In addition to the ion exchange, ternary, solid state phases are examined. Raman analysis, aided by DFT calculations, is used to analyze, reported as well as new ternary, solid state phases for the presence of endohedral clusters. Crystallization yields compounds which contain unprecedented clusters like [Co@Ge9]5–, [Ru@Sn9]6– and [Co2@Ge17]6–.
