Recent findings suggest an association between obesity, the loss of gut barrier function and changes in microbiota profiles. The primary objective was to examine the effect of caloric restriction and acute overfeeding on insulin sensitivity, gut permeability, and fecal microbiota. In essence, caloric restriction improves gut permeability and low-grade inflammation with minor impact on gut microbiota profiles. Short-term overfeeding does neither affect insulin sensitivity nor gut permeability. Furthermore, changes in dominant communities of fecal bacteria are highly individual.
