The present research work deals with the damage type of flank breakage. In line with the comprehensive experimental investigations, this type of damage was systematically investigated. Beside the main investigations, in which two material specific S-N-curves (Wöhler curves) were determined, supplementary investigations showed the main influences on this type of damage such as geometry, heat treatment and case hardening depth. In the line of the theoretical work, a calculation model of a superior grade which is based on the local comparison of load and strength beyond the material depth is presented. Furthermore, a praxis-orientated calculation model, which may be integrated into standardized calculation rules, was developed as well, which offers a first appraisal of a gear stage concerning the risk of the damage type of flank breakage already during the design period of a gear box.
