This analysis focuses on the identification of predictors of institutionalisation in patients with Alzheimer's disease, with emphasis on German-speaking areas. In 15 specialised centers, 292 patients and their primary carer were individually interviewed and/ or tested on various variables. Only patients age and severity of neuropsychiatric symptoms could be identified as significant predictors. Similar outcomes can be found in the international literature confirming our findings. Interventions can concentrate on improving the situation of patients with very high age and patients with severe neuropsychiatric symptoms. Hereby it is possible to meliorate the burden for carers and to reduce preventable or premature institutionalisations which saves health care costs.
