The combination of hydrodynamically generated cavitation with disinfectants is a new approach for an effective disinfection of water. For generation of oscillating cavitation bubbles a new cavitation reactor was designed (micro grid with post flow nozzle) and the process engineering aspects have been characterized. It was shown that the energy demand is reduced compared to the commonly used orifice plates. Using the example of
Escherichia coli, it could be demonstrated that the combination of hydrodynamically generated cavitation with chlorine dioxide enables a more efficient disinfection. Especially, this combination proofed to be beneficial at high numbers of germs and low concentrations of chlorine dioxide.
