We replace the fixed parameterizations for dynamic isobar amplitudes used in conventional partial-wave analyses by step-like functions, to extract them directly from the data. Doing so, we encounter continuous mathematical ambiguities and show ways to resolve them. In turn, we apply this method to a data set for three-pion final states collected at the COMPASS experiment and extract the dynamic isobar amplitudes for 24 partial waves. We fit the extracted dynamic isobar amplitudes with simple models and obtain a detailed insight into the two- and three-particle dynamics of the process.
