Over the last years, medical science has increasingly focused on the mutual interaction of psyche and soma. We investigated those interactions in perioperative setting within patients with degenerative lumbar and thoracic spine disease. Preoperative clinical, mental and social variables provide useful insights into which clinical health status can be expected after one year. Our findings show the importance of the assessment of mental comorbidities in degenerative spine surgery and their consideration in treatment planning.
