We investigated the association of common medication with PSA levels in 15.452 men at the age of 45. PSA levels were significantly lower among men taking metformin (-18%), insulin (-14%), statins (-8%), acetylsalicylic acid (-11%), beta blockers (-7%), thiazide diuretics (-8%), ACE inhibitors (-5%) and low dose finasteride 1 mg/day (-28%), respectively. Almost every 4th man at the age of 45 is taking one of the abovementioned medications. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to take a detailed medication anamnesis to interpret the PSA levels correctly.
