Spirometry has the weakness to depend on patients’ cooperation, thus less demanding methods might be of value, such as ultrasound-based capnovolumetry which requires only tidal breathing. This doctoral thesis comprises three published studies analysing the advantages, capabilities and limitations of capnovolumetry in the diagnosis of the obstructive airway diseases asthma and COPD. It provides data on diagnostic accuracy and algorithms, as well as interpretation of parameters. The results might help to extend the set of diagnostic tools in particular for non-pulmonary specialists.
