The present dissertation examines the effect of two theory-driven approaches to promote physical activity - the transtheoretical model and the trans-contextual model - in Chinese college students. Firstly, the dissertation briefly analyses the problem of physical inactivity of Chinese students. Secondly, the selection of a behavioral epidemiological and ecological framework for studying the problem is described. The theoretical background is then explicated leading to the derivation of hypotheses that were tested in empirical studies. The studies have been published in 3 journal articles in international peer-reviewed journals.
