To reduce fuel consumption in heavy-duty commercial vehicles, an Organic Rankine Cycle for waste heat recovery, combined with a mild hybrid concept, is designed and experimentally investigated. By means of a dynamic overall vehicle model, which is coupled in co-simulation, the interactions of the waste heat recovery system with the combustion engine, the cooling system and the longitudinal vehicle dynamics are evaluated and the overall system is optimized with regard to fuel consumption savings.
