Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the leading cause of non-traumatic disability in young adults. The auto-immune disease is characterized by inflamed regions in the brain, visible in structural MRI. This thesis investigated two important aspects of MRI based MS evaluation. In the first study, we compared 232 MS patients to 116 control subjects and found a minimal lesion size threshold of 3 mm to be a reasonable choice as a diagnostic marker for MS diagnosis. In a second study, we showed, by retrospectively analyzing 3233 MR images, gadolinium deposition in the brain even after a single administration of linear gadolinium-based contrast agent, but not after cyclic contrast agents.
