According to current knowledge mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) - representing an essential part of the hematopoietic stem cell niche - are considered to play an important role in the pathogenesis of myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). This study examined the effect of azacitidine, a cytidine analog used for therapy of higher-risk MDS, on characteristics of MSC and their interaction with hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells. Results show that azacitidine functionally and phenotypically modulates MSC.
