Titanium oxycarbide (TiOC) electrocatalyst supports were prepared via a carbothermal treatment of anodic TiO
2 films on polycrystalline titanium. The effect of annealing temperature and substrate texture on the properties of the supports were investigated through detailed analyses of the materials. TiOC stability and conductivity at the solid/liquid interface was studied in acidic aqueous electrolytes with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. TiOC supported Pt catalysts were tested in terms of their activity towards the electrochemical oxidation of ethanol at temperatures of up to 90 °C.
