Heterocyclic structures are core elements in a plethora of bioactive natural products and thus constitute important leads in the search for new bioactive compounds. Especially molecules that exhibit
N- and
O-containing structural motifs often show promising biological activities. However, the synthesis of unusual frameworks that bear a high heteroatom content often cannot be accomplished using current methodology. In the present work, methods for the preparation of unusual
N- and
O-containing heterocyclic structures were developed via halogen-mediated cyclization reactions and applied in the synthesis of a novel, heterocyclic natural product.
