The study examined if surgical staff is rebreathing carbondioxide by wearing surgical masks caused by the masks impermeability for carbondioxide. Therefore the transcutaneous partial pressure, the breathing frequency, the heart rate and the oxygen saturation was measured without wearing a mask and during 35 minutes after putting on a surgical of two different types. The transcutaneous partial pressure of carbon dioxide was significantly increased at each individual and both masks (5,60mmHg, STEV 2,38) the breathing frequency, the heart rate and the oxygen saturation were unchanged. To prevent hypercapnia, the permeability of surgical masks for carbon dioxide should be increased and the unnecessary use of surgical masks should de avoided.
