This thesis investigates philanthropic investors' motivations, actions, and performance in private capital markets. In three essays, I explore the idea that return maximization motives do not exclusively influence investment decisions of charitable foundations and university endowments in Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Building on qualitative and quantitative empirical methods, I show that mission considerations play a significant role in philanthropic organizations' investment decisions.
