Upper Jurassic carbonates, the source of deep geothermal energy in the North Alpine Foreland Basin (SE Germany), have been insufficiently studied with regard to their economic utilization. Focusing on fracture initiation and propagation around the borehole, this study characterizes the mechanical, structural, and stress-related behavior of carbonate rocks. Cutting-edge empirical and numerical approaches support recommendations on deep core drilling and orientations of productive geothermal wells.
