The cumulative dissertation examines the global dominance of environmental policy instruments using the case study of renewable energy (RE) auctions. Empirically, the thesis compares the global 'career' of RE auctions with diffusion processes of other RE instruments and identifies implications for the further transformation of the energy system. Theoretically, the thesis develops hypotheses of patterns in the emergence of globally dominant instruments and discusses effects and risks of such a position of policy instruments.
