Lanthanide doped and hydride containing compounds have only recently been considered as phosphor materials. Profound knowledge on the luminescence properties of such materials is obtained herein. Besides known fluoride hydrides that can be synthesized via reactions under H
2 pressure, interesting material classes, e.g. the borate hydride, were discovered and were characterized by neutron diffraction, solid-state NMR, vibrational spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations. Also, complex borohydrides seem to be very promising for luminescence thermometry.
