Wide-span constructions comprising lamellas made of timber or steel influenced the development of innovative roof structures in the 1920s. The modular systems of three German patent holders – Zollinger in timber, Junkers and Hünnebeck in steel – were distributed worldwide. Today, many hundreds of these roofs have survived and their structures are found in a wide range of different conditions. To date only a few studies have been undertaken related to the condition survey, structural appraisal and refurbishment strategy for steel structures built using the Junkers or Hünnebeck system. The construction, geometry and load-bearing behaviour are the focus of the work at hand.
