In this work, a new monoclonal antibody for the detection of the necine base Retronecine, representing the basic structure of toxicologically relevant pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), was generated by using a newly designed immunogen and a special screening strategy. The antibody was characterized regarding its kinetic binding constants, cross-reactivities as well as stability in relevant matrices. Furthermore, its use for developing an indirect competitive ELISA and therefore a quantitative method for the analysis of Retronecine-based PAs in food (tea and honey) was investigated.
