In this dissertation, the role of the low-grade infections in the development the screw loosening was researched. A prospective clinical investigation of explanted screws in patients who underwent revision spine surgery revealed a link between microbiological evidence and screw loosening in 42.4 % of patients. The best detection method for these microorganisms was ultrasound-assisted sonication. Finally, this study implies that cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, obesity, malignancy and smoking constitute risk factors for the development of low virulent infections and associated screw loosening.
