Poorly specified liquid mixtures comprised of specified and unknown components appear regularly in process engineering. In the present work, a novel perturbation scheme is presented for the thermodynamic modeling of poorly specified liquid mixtures. The perturbation scheme is applied to several example systems and process simulations. The present work also reports experimental data on the solubility of α-lactose in water-ethanol-electrolyte solutions. The experimental solubility data are modeled using two approaches, both of which are based on the UNIQUAC model.
