Brown adipose tissue (BAT) is the major site of nonshivering thermogenesis. In this cold-induced process energy is converted into heat through the uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation from mitochondrial ATP production. The first aim of this PhD thesis was to evaluate and corroborate the role of macrophages in mitochondrial function and non-shivering thermogenesis. The second aim of this PhD thesis was to identify the molecular mechanisms underlying energy metabolism control by the scaffold protein p62.
