The virulence factors of
Listeria monocytogenes are well-investigated. By contrast, little data is available about the nitrogen-(N)-metabolism and its adaption to the host environment. In this study
15N-isotopologue profiling was established, and N-sources of
L. monocytogenes characterised. Here, the simultaneous use of different N-sources could be shown. Moreover, a method for the investigation of nutrient fluxes between bacteria and
Caenorhabditis elegans was developed, demonstrating a N-flux from the host to a pathogen.
