International surveys show that physicians working in private practice use placebos and nonspecific therapies to a considerable extent. We investigated whether the frequency of use differs between different specialties and if there is a relation with medical-professional attitudes. General practitioners use placebos and nonspecific therapies more often than internists and orthopedists. The doctor’s self-perception presumably has influence on the use of those therapies and on the doctor’s way of answering the questions.     «
