The tetraspanin KAI1 has been described as a metastasis suppressor in different solid tumors. Also, a splice variant, KAI1-splice, has been detected which correlates with poor patient prognosis. We studied the function of KAI1 and KAI1-splice in cultured human ovarian cancer cells. In vitro cell migration assays disclosed that KAI1-splice, in comparison to KAI1, significantly enhanced integrin alphavbeta3-mediated cell motility. Moreover, colocalization of KAI1-splice with the cell/cell-adhesion molecule E-cadherin was impaired.
