This dissertation analyzes past, current and future developments in the German old age provision system from an individual and an institutional viewpoint. Three aspects of the statutory pension insurance system are analyzed in detail, namely: individual replacement rates, the pension adjustment formula and pension reduction rates for early retirement. It becomes evident that younger generations need more private savings for retirement, e.g. via a so-called Riester pension. This thesis identifies critical issues on the Riester market by comparing it to the Swedish system and focuses in particular on the potential problem of adverse selection. Furthermore, each chapter identifies important policy conclusions.
