This paper analyses the profitability of automatic and conventional milking systems. The competitiveness of the two milking systems depends mainly on their capital requirements, useful life, labour requirements, and milking performance as well as on the milking systems influences on the milk yield. At present automatic milking systems are less profitable than conventional milking systems. If the prices of automatic milking systems should decrease or if their useful life, milking performance and technical performance should be improved, the new technology will gain wide currency, as dairy farmers are very interested in labour-saving production processes.
