Allothermal gasification of biomass in fluidized beds, produces a high value product gas with the unwanted byproduct tar. The influence of primary operating conditions on the raw tar content is investigated. In combination with measurements of the location of tar release, recommendations for low tar operation can be made. Secondary tar removal with iron based catalysts is investigated. These catalysts are less effective than nickel based and precious metal based catalysts, but can work in a first cleaning stage.
