Liver cirrhosis is a frequent condition with a high mortality rate. Systematic area-wide data on epidemiology of its complications is rare. Thus the prospective and multicentric study "SENSATION" surveyed incidence and outcome of complications of End Stage Liver Disease, using a network of 38 hospitals in and around Munich. Gastrointestinal bleeding (45,4%) and hepatic encephalopathy (20,6%) were the most frequent complications. Predictors for mortality were a SAPS II > 40, current or passed renal failure and admission to a 'low volume center'.
